Education is expensive in Uganda.
Even in the Primary school where education is officially free it
has many invisible costs like purchase of uniform, books,
pens/pencils and other scholastic needs. Many orphans both
supported by the project and those who are not may not afford to
pay fees to college and University level. Many drop out of
school due to lack of school requirements while others do not go
to school at all.
Parents Concern with support from the French Embassy in Uganda
has constructed a Vocational school to provide tailoring skills
to 100 children every year. Relevant skills can lead to
employment, income generation, empowerment and self esteem.
The tailoring project makes designed garments which we sell for
income. We sell them and some necklaces made by widows both in
Uganda and in other countries. USA gives us the biggest foreign
market for our items. We are grateful to our partners.
More skills are needed for providing for more young people'
varied interests and ability. There is need to put up a Computer
training Lab, a carpentry workshop, building and construction,
knitting, beauty saloon, nutrition/ bakery, agriculture science,
tie and dye making, cookery, nursery teaching and other skills.
We shall also need a dormitory for girls who come from very far
as they are vulnerable as they go back home in evenings. Future
plans include constructing of a Youth multi-purpose hall for
meetings, seminars, conferences, counseling, health services and
recreation. The center will provide youth friendly services.
